One of the most common questions we hear at Mawan Tours & Travel is, “When is the best time to visit Kenya?” The honest answer is that Kenya rewards visitors year-round — but which season suits you best depends on what you want to see, and how you like to travel.
Dry Season (June to October): Peak Wildlife Viewing
Kenya’s dry season runs roughly from June through October and is widely considered the classic safari window. Vegetation thins out, water sources shrink, and animals gather predictably around remaining rivers and waterholes — making game viewing easier and more concentrated. This period also overlaps with the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara, which typically peaks between July and October, when vast herds cross from the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing. Expect drier trails, sunnier skies, and busier parks, since this is the most popular time for international visitors.
Wet or Green Season (November to May): Fewer Crowds, Lush Scenery
The wetter months bring shorter afternoon showers, dramatically greener landscapes, and newborn wildlife across many parks — a rewarding time for photographers and travellers who prefer smaller crowds. This period, particularly November through April, is also prime time for bird-watching, as migratory species from Europe and Asia join Kenya’s resident birdlife. Roads can be muddier in the heaviest rains of April and May, but many camps offer reduced rates during this quieter stretch of the calendar.
Choosing Based on What Matters to You
If witnessing the Great Migration is the priority, aim for July to October. If you’d rather avoid crowds, enjoy lush scenery and don’t mind the occasional shower, consider November to May. Birders in particular should lean toward the November–April window. And if you’re combining a safari with coastal relaxation, Kenya’s beaches are pleasant for most of the year, with the long rains of April and May being the main exception to plan around.
